The worst were those who played the game of thrones.

“And it is important that the individual books refer to the civil wars, but the series title reminds us constantly that the real issue lies in the North beyond the Wall.” —GRRM

“The common people pray for rain, healthy children, and a summer that never ends,” Ser Jorah told her. “It is no matter to them if the high lords play their game of thrones, so long as they are left in peace.” He gave a shrug. “They never are.” -Jorah, AGoT
“Why is it always the innocents who suffer most, when you high lords play your game of thrones?” -Varys, AGoT

#like this gets at what troubles me most about the adaptation #is that they find the game of thrones far more interesting than its effects on the world at large #which tinges all the scenes with a nihilism that isn’t present in the books #because the show seems to lack a perspective on the game itself #playing it as the most essential thing #instead of the best encapsulation of human folly (via waverlyrowan)

mod note: While there are multiple typos in these images (“Roynar” should be Rhoynar, “Durrandon” should be Durrendon, “Gardiner” should be Gardener, and “the last native king” in the seventh image should be “the last Riverlands king”), this is nevertheless a very useful resource of pre-Conquest history.
Lord Torrhen Stark, better known as the King Who Knelt, was King In The North until Aegon I Targaryen came north with his dragons. He was named Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North after submitting to Aegon. He surrendered the crown of the Kings of Winter to Aegon. Its whereabouts are unknown.
"They were good dogs. It was easy to forget that every one was named for a girl that Ramsay had hunted and killed."
Sitting around a hotel room talking doesn’t sound so hard, but it can be grueling. Especially when they all ask the same damn questions.
(Tyrion is my favorite character. Okay? OKAY? Can we PLEASE put that one to rest?? I love all my viewpoint characters, Arya and Sansa and Bran, Jon Snow and Brienne, Arianne and Cersei and Jaime, Theon, even Victarion and the Damphair, ALL of them, but I love Tyrion the bestest. Tyrion son of Tywin, the Imp, second son of Casterly Rock. How many bloody times do I need to say it?? I swear, from now on, whenever anybody asks me, “who is your favorite character,” I am going to start naming characters from other people’s books. Cugel the Clever. Flashman. Gatsby. Hotspur. Solomon Kane. A different one each time… )
